Mermaid Rose Scissors (c)

Mermaid Rose Scissors (c ) - 3 1/2 inches, sharp tip, in gold or silver - copyright design of updated antiques

As I have written about the mermaid under another pair's description, I am going to describe only the rose here.

The garden rose has been around for over 5,000 years.  After importing rose from Egypt, the Roman Empire grew roses for everything from perfume to medicine.  In the 15th century, the War of the Roses was symbolized by white or red roses.  Today the rose is regarded as a symbol for beauty, love, purity, passion, consummation, joy and perfectionism.  In the Song of Solomon, it is written "I am the rose of Sharon..." and in Isaiah, "I rejoice and blossom as the rose..."  Legend has it that before the rose became an earthly flower, it grew thorn less in Paradise.  After Adam and Eve were banished from Eden, grew to remind humans of their sins and fall from grace.  The rose's fragrance and beauty remained to remind of what they lost.
